The Pergola!!

Well, the pergola is FINALLY DONE!  It only took about 3 times longer than they said it would take, but through Greg's tantrums perseverance and my supervising hard work, it's complete.  Here's some pictures of the process:

Do you notice that Molly is waiting for someone to throw her the ball?  They're not busy or anything, obviously.

Stiiiillllll waiting...Notice she's moved the ball for them in case they didn't notice it.

Here's the finished product!
(She's still waiting for someone to throw her the ball.)

Those are moonflower and morning glory seed sprouts next to the post.  I'm hoping they grow enough this summer.  We will be having people over soon to enjoy it!

  1. THAT IS SO FABULOUS!!! And I love the posts in pots idea!
Is this a pre-fab kind of thing? Where did you get it?

  2. It's a pre-fab thing that we bought through Costco's website. It says it will take two people 8 hours to do, but that's COMPLETELY not true. Our first set of posts fell over, ruining the first 4 hours worth of work. It probably would have gone smoother at the beginning if we were setting the posts on concrete footers in the ground, but since we didn't want to drill into our patio, we had to do the pots. The bottoms are concrete footers and then we filled around it with rocks for drainage. We also drilled holes in the bottoms of the pots to help the water drain.

  6. We've talked about doing that ourselves. The pots, not the pergola. Let's not get crazy. Do they have cement in them to hold down and stabilize the pergola?

  7. Wow, why didn't I think of this? I have a pergola but didn't think to put it in pots. However, I do have an umbrella that we put in a pot of cement. Great idea you have.

  8. The posts of the pergola are sitting on concrete footers that we put in the bottom of the pots. The footers are about 12-16 inches tall. Then we filled in around them with rock so the soil would drain and to provide extra weight and stability to the posts. The most important part, we found, was to make sure the concrete footers are the same height and are a good consistency. The first batch we made was too dry and the footers just crumbled. I absolutely love the way it turned it. I can't wait until the vines start growing up the posts and the flowers start growing in the pots! Thanks for looking at our project! :)

  9. If anyone tries this, I would also recommend putting some kind of filter paper between the soil and rocks to keep the soil from falling down between the rocks when you water.
